Why do you want to come here?Based on what you know about Alderspring Ranch and regenerative agriculture, how do you think that the work you will do here matters?SCENARIO It’s morning, and the supervisor in charge of assigning horses lets you know you’ll be riding Hank that day. You try to hide that you’re disappointed. Hank is the oldest, dullest, and least “fun to ride” horse, and you rode him the last time he went out two days ago. You have been riding your whole life and believe you bring some experience to the table. While you were riding Hank the other day, you saw one intern having a hard time with the green horse they'd been assigned to the point where the horse and rider were both losing their confidence and the situation was even a bit of a safety concern. Today, the supervisor assigns that intern to the same young horse they were struggling with. You feel like you could help by putting some more miles on these younger horses, and Hank would be a much better confidence-builder for the less experienced riders on the crew. How do you respond to the situation above?SCENARIO 2 It’s been a long and difficult range stint. It’s been raining for several days and nobody on the crew has a dry item of clothing left. You’re now herding cattle through a stretch of thick timber on the way back to camp and are looking forward to dinner and a dry bedroll. You are riding at the front of the herd when suddenly something sets the cattle near you off and they begin to run, scattering through the trees in the growing darkness. Your heart sinks. In this dark, it’ll take hours to gather the herd back up, but in wolf country you can’t risk leaving them wandering overnight. It’ll be at least midnight before you can regroup and finally reach camp and that beckoning bedroll. A few minutes later, as you’re working to get the herd back together, one of the other crew members rides up to you. They are clearly frustrated. The moment they get close to you, they begin yelling at you. They say that the cattle ran because you put too much pressure on up front. They follow this up with a string of impressively colorful language directed at you.How do you respond?Select an AnswerChoose the option you feel best describes you. Please select the option you feel best represents your experience herding and handling cattle: *What's a cow?I’ve only seen cows in pictures, I have no experience handling them.I’ve handled cattle a few times.I’ve worked cattle quite a bit on foot.I’ve worked cattle both on foot and on horseback. I wouldn’t consider myself an expert but I have basic familiarity with the way cattle move.I’ve been handling cattle for years and would consider myself very experienced in all aspects of cattle handling and management. Please select the option you feel best represents your horse handling experience. *Very limited experience. I’ve ridden once or twice, but I’m not super comfortable around horses.I’ve ridden several times in my life and I think I could catch, lead, bridle and saddle a horse and safely ride it at a walk, trot, and lope.I’ve been riding for a while and I’m pretty comfortable and confident riding a broke horse.I’ve been riding for several years and have ridden green horses with supervision but I’m not sure I have the skills to train one on my own yet.I’ve ridden much of my life and am comfortable riding and training green or young horses.I’m a very experienced rider. I’ve ridden for all of my life and I’ve shown horses and/or trained horses for years. Why are you applying? Pick one reason that BEST applies, even if multiple options describe you. *I would like to push myself outside of my comfort zone by trying something completely different.I am interested in regenerative agriculture and would like to learn more about how my food is raised.I know the value of hard work and would like to test the limits of my grit and endurance under challenging conditions.I have or plan to have a small homestead/farm and see this as a way to gain practical skills for my farm.I would primarily like to learn about horsemanship and improve my skills in that area.I’m a university student in an agriculture-related major (ranch management, livestock nutrition, agricultural policy, agricultural education, etc.) and want to get hands-on practical experience and/or college credit.I am a university student in a science-related major (environmental science, range management, biology, ecology, etc.) and want to get hands-on practical experience and/or college credit.I’m a university student in an equine science-related major and want to get hands-on practical experience and/or college credit.I’m already working with livestock but am interested in learning about how you graze cattle on large scale landscapes and mitigate conflicts with predators so I can implement these practices on another allotment.I’m pursuing a career in ranching, farming, regenerative practices, or some other agriculture-related field and I think this internship is the next step for me.I'm pursuing a career in the related fields of environmental law/policy, rangeland management, wildlife biology, ecology, etc. and I think this internship would provide me greater understanding of how livestock grazing can be a positive source of change in rangeland ecosystems. Is there anything else you'd like us to know about you or how you might fit on our crew? Thanks for your time filling out this application!
