That’s 6th daughter Annie and her young border pup, Ginny, in the feed truck and ready to go bring some fresh green hay to the herd. It was a beautiful sunny day, so Annie was just wearing a t-shirt and a light denim jacket!

Before feeding, we cut and pull the strings that hold those big green bales together. Annie will bundle these strings up in a knot and put them in the back of the pickup. We’re careful about leaving strings laying around out in the field where an animal might get tangled in them.

Quote of the Week

We were brought up around willows. They were behind our house, in front of our house, up the creek, down the creek. We ride horseback through them, over them. We love the genus Salix (Caryl taught us). The willow. Twenty six native willows in our area. Caryl knows them. Some are promiscuous, graying the species specific lines. 

On a completely different front, the kids, growing up, and now even as adults love Shel Silverstein. Irreverent, inappropriate poems. But often timely and wise. And so today’s quote features both:

Sometimes I am grateful to be clad in the cover of steel and safety glass. And to be racing along at 55 MPH. Because if I was simply a human on two legs in the deep winter white as we drove through in a sort of snowplow carved tunnel, I am almost certain the fiercest herbivore would have me dead.

Not to be eaten, mind you. Herbivore would simply want to deal with the nuisance of a human encroaching on their habitat.

Last week, after a full day of skiing fresh powder up along the Montana line (a much-needed break from the ranch!), we were making our way back on US highway 93 in the gathering darkness. 93 is our highway of sorts. Our lives intersect with it often, in our land of few roads in the central Idaho mountains. Most of the country around us is a de-facto wilderness of jumbled peaks and canyons; it is completely un-peopled and is only made accessible and passable by the rivers and creeks that intersect it.
