We are back to regular summer shipping. It’s free ground shipping for most states, and 2nd day air for the far flung East Coasters and hotter states (Sorry, friends–but we want to get that beef to you frozen…not precooked!)

This Week on the Ranch

It’s range rider Josh getting Robin ready for a day ride out of Tall Timber Camp, the latest cow camp in the high Big Hat Country. Little does Josh know that he won’t be back here until sometime around midnight–another longish day bringing beeves to the best grass.

It’s crew boss Maddy bringing in the horse cavvy to the new digs of Tall Timber Camp. Maddy had to recon through trail-less country over a mountain range to bring her crew and loose horses here.

It’s Melanie, left, and Linnaea saddling up two green horses for the 10 mile ride from the drop point to the new cow camp. Both of these horses have never been on this range before–Merry, on the left, has hardly been rode, let alone in a crew/cowhorse setting. The girls were pretty wary as they set out, and made a good experience for the two new recruits.

Glenn shot this pic of the crew settling into cow camp after herding the cattle to the best grass. The time is around midnight as the crew pulls gear and gets dinner ready. Sleep will eventually come to all, but it will be short.

The sun is up bright on the hillside of Tall Timber Camp. The cows are getting up and rarin’ to head out for breakfast. There’s over 450 of them in this bunch, and are in a temporary twine enclosure to keep them safe from wolves at night. The crew puts them in one of these pens every night to keep them safe.

Aspen is alive and well in the Hat Creek country in all age classes as the crew keeps beeves away from regenerating aspen stands. The structural and species diversity component are what make all difference ecologically when we keep our cows out of sensitive wet areas like this one.

Through the insufferable boil of rolling dust I looked up and spotted daughter Melanie. She had showed up in our badly warped game of leapfrogging our way on foot down remote forested roads and had mustered all the strength she had to continue the struggle about 20 feet down the steep slope. She knew enough not to be directly under me; the rolling rocks and logs and debris from my own efforts would potentially whack her. I stopped for a second to watch her.

She appeared an indefatigable human rototiller. In the 95-degree heat, her face no longer glistened from sweat; instead, wet had become a magnet for a thick coating of plant debris and dust. Sinewy muscles strained and pulsed in the work at the end of the hoe mattock. I noted that her arms and legs were badly bruised and would be black and blue after today. After 8 straight hours on the hoe, she was still going strong, although I could see the fatigue and the strain in her face.

I knew she was exhausted. We had to quit. It was 7 PM, and we had been in the backcountry mountain peaks all day, hiking a total of more 12 miles in our foray against invaders, but we weren’t quite done…
