Though you can’t see more than these few, in the forest pictured above there are actually about 450 happily grazing beeves. It’s that point in the summer where we bring the beeves into these high timber meadows, where green grass hasn’t yet dried out in the heat and both cattle and riders can find a respite from the constant sun. The beeves find something else there, too, in the form of beautiful diverse wild plant nutrition.

That’s range rider Wesley, herding the beeves out of the timber and back towards camp at the end of a long day of riding. Wesley has become quite a hand on the range with us this summer, with a natural knack for understanding horses and cattle (it’s not something everyone can do). He’s mounted on the mare Jimmie. She’s one of the previously untouched feral horses you may remember Melanie and the other girls started this spring. Now, Jimmie has become a steady mount on the range!

And that’s range rider Josh, bringing the cattle down from a high meadow graze to get water. The backdrop behind him has served as a constant companion of ours this summer. It’s a view we never quite grow tired of seeing.

I was on Ruby’s back today. She is a beautiful red palomino, and finally, she’s become a horse instead of acting like an entitled pretty girl all the time (I think she was a true pasture pet of the sugar cube-several-times-a-day-kind back in Montana where we found her).

Anyway, she’s finally patient enough with me to put up with my frequent get-offs. We’ll be herding cows and wading through deep Vaseyana sage at mid elevation, and there: I’ll spot one. An agate.

There’s a fair amount of the volcanic origin outcrops up there. I’ll pick them up, take a look at their color, and 99% of the time, drop them back on the ground. But every now and again, I find something a little more unique. So I pocket it, only to often drop it off later, the original interest now faded.

But there’s those one-in a millions. And I’m not the only gatherer. It just so happens that people have been at it a long time in these Idaho Mountains….

It was a hunter who first picked it up, and he probably was a resident of the Hat Creek country itself. The year is anyone’s guess, but it may be as early as when the last sheets of mountain ice left the Rockies—over 10,000 years ago. He may have been more recently a member of the Bear Hats, a subtribe of the Shoshoni that found their home in the remote and isolated canyons of the Hat Creek tributaries. It was simply too hard to get in and out of these remote lands, and that reason of geographic obstacles caused the people of this part of earth to stay put…
