This week on the ranch…
This years annual family photo capture event took place this week – here’s one of the keepers. Daughters, son-in-law, grandkids and a good border pup in one shot made possible by tripod. Though the afternoon resulted in many other photographs, ranging in dramatic levels of seriousness and hilarity, this was seemingly the best outtake.
Long summer days on the range have turned to fall days on green pasture at the home ranch. Daughter Melanie is weighing the beeves that are home from a summer of grazing on our mountainous rangeland. By having a start weight and end weight for each bovine we calculate and track average daily gain during the summer. Through our herd management technique we’ve coined “inherding” we are able to avoid overgrazing of certain areas and regenerate creek beds. A low stress life on the range, guarded from predators by our constant presence and guided to the best grass via horseback means that our cattle gain weight better. For the Alderspring herd grazing the largest single certified organic landscape in the contiguous United States every summer, we have a goal of 2 lbs. average daily gain. Over the next few days we’ll find out whether or not we reached that goal.
Linnaea snapped this shot after moving a group of freshly weighed beeves onto a new pasture. We heavily monitor grass and move hotwire paddocks often during the herds transition from summer rangeland to days of winter feeding of our certified organic hay; the bounty of consistent, well managed irrigation and healthy soils on the home ranch.
With September come the days that beckon a sense of urgency to wrap up the range project and look toward the quickly approaching winter months. Pictured are the yearling colts beneath a bright moon with Linnaea looking on after a day of hotwire.

Dear Friends
“Dang it.”, I thought. I could hear the squawk of magpies over the continuous rustle of aspens turning golden in the mountain breeze. The striking contrast of white and black iridescent beauty in their plumage was quickly eclipsed by their grisly reputation: dead animal eaters. Hearing the cacophony of chattering and clamoring magpie was not a pleasant sound to my rancher ear anywhere on our summer grass ranges, because where the carrion birds gathered there was usually death. My immediate concern pushed away the enjoyment of thick air that filled my senses with the fragrance of fall, instead it dominated my mind with this thought: another wolf kill.
As I broke through the white barked aspen trees astride my Morgan mare Missy into a broad meadowed opening on the banks of Little Hat Creek, I spotted the carcass, complete with a flock of magpies scrapping over their newfound bounty of beef.
