This week on the ranch…
Daughter Linnaea snapped this photo of the herd at the home ranch awaiting fresh pasture – lined up under Stew the cow dog’s watchful eye, ready to take action. This is the season of carefully managed grazing. Daughters Melanie and Linnaea have been calculating days on grass, building hot wire paddocks, and rotating the herd until the snow flies and it’s time to start feeding winter hay stores.
Also this week begins the collection of firewood to fuel wood stoves during the winter months. Thursday’s crew was after wood for Daughter Abby and son-in-law Ethan, Jeremiah and Caitlin on the lease ranch, and Scott Rains’ family (our meat manager and manager of new ranch in Tendoy). We will do one or two more of these logging days yet before the snow flies.
Rain and cooler weather over the last week provided some relief from smoky skies and hot, windy conditions. These fall days are starting to get cooler and bring us closer to winter and the white that it carries. Daughter Linnaea snapped this shot of Allie the Pyrenees enjoying the aftermath of some moisture in the form of mud on the home ranch.
Quote of the Week
“Rain is grace; rain is the sky descending to the earth; without rain, there would be no life.”
—John Updike
This week’s story: From Alderspring to Orcas
Dear Friends
As we sat on a massive driftwood fir log while dining on our light lunch of summer sausage and sheep cheese, Caryl and I watched the V-shaped ripple of disturbance in the quiet bay waters manifest a harbor seal. He cautiously raised his head above water, his eyes furtively scanning from one horizon to another as he gathered needed air for his mammalian lungs. And then, in an instant, he was gone.
I grabbed my Buck knife, which I had stuck in the wood of the massive fir trunk pushed clear of the pounding surf by a storm surge on the gravel beach. I cut another morsel of cured beef. The placid waters of this warm and sunny September day stood in stark contrast to the stormy winter day months ago of high seas and violent southwest winds that drove all manner of flotsam and jetsam from the vast waters of the Salish Sea and perched it high among the amalgam of volcanic and sandstone rocks that typified the 400 some islands of the San Juan Island archipelago that Caryl and I had been exploring.
