This week on the ranch…

Caitlin snapped this photo of the beeves awaiting fresh pasture over at the lease ranch. Part of the herd is over there to finish out these last few weeks of grazing. By this time the herd is in tune with hot wire habits and prove to be well aware when a fresh paddock is being set up for their benefit.

Here’s the herd over at the lease ranch heads down, grazing and content. With a heavy alfalfa presence in this pasture, we walk through the herd and give each animal a close look at least twice a day to make sure there are no signs of bloat, or any other issues.

On Thursday Jeremiah set out for the ranch in Tendoy (one mountain range over from the home ranch) to fix a big leak in some underground irrigation pipe. The pipe had rotted out, creating quite the mud pit in its wake. Without enough material remaining for a solid weld, that section of pipe will need cut out, and a new section welded in. Not for lack of trying, as you can see in the above image, Jeremiah walked away caked in clay-like mud.

Dear Friends

The Salmon River was starting to swell with the first release of spring snow melt, and it flowed like a ribbon of liquid cold steel. Twelve-year old Melanie and I stood horseback, wordless, in the spitting rain on the rocky shoreline and eyed the 20 or so cattle on the opposite bank across the swirling stream of opacity. Escapees from our first bunch turned out on summer range, they were grazing happily in the alfalfa field that they found waiting for them, unfenced, after swimming across. There were mother cows and their young calves. It was hard telling how long they’d been there.

Melanie turned toward me, the rain funneling down the back of her rain-stained cowboy hat. Her lips looked a little blue, and cold. “How long do you think they’ve been there?
