This week on the ranch…
Remember those annual family photos from a few weeks back? Here’s another keeper. Daughters left to right: Becky, Emily, Melanie, Annie, Maddy, Linnaea and Abby. With three daughters now in college, orchestrating schedules becomes more difficult. To have everyone home at the ranch is always a treat.
Glenn and faithful border pup Clyde pictured above, with watchful eye over the herd on a fresh paddock. Alfalfa is rich this time of year so the beeves remain under close supervision. This deep green forage is seemingly never ending, with the warm, sunny days that October has brought us – the beeves will likely remain grazing this fall bounty for the coming weeks.
Daughter Annie, pictured above feeding horses under a bright moon – captured by Melanie. As the days get shorter, the overlap of evening chores with dusk is ever increasing. It won’t be long until the cattle, too, rely on this winter store for daily nutrition. Oldest daughter Melanie is a gifted photographer; her work is a wonderful depiction of our days and nights on the ranch and range in the summer.

This week’s story: “An Irish Blessing”
Dear Friends
Despite it being fall, it has been hard to keep up on the ranch this week. There’s cattle scattered over 3 different ranches, and 6 of our solid team of hands are gone on a much needed vacay this week!
But the weather’s been lovely, so that makes it easy. This morning I was down at the ranch near Salmon, Idaho in the first light before sunup moving 300 finish beeves to a new grass break on lush fall alfalfa. As I pulled the pickup truck up to the waiting herd (they recognize my truck!), I checked the thermometer: 27 degrees. I looked down at the alfalfa.
Iced. Covered with rime.
And that in itself can be dangerous–there is simply too much protein goodness with those frost damaged cells walls, and they get digestive stress. So I set up a tiny “micropaddock” of about an acre to get their bellies full of the whole plant instead of just the frozen tips. Dilution is the solution, and they happily ate their fill.
So all is well, but I had not an iota of time to pen a fresh tome this week, and so, I sent this one from a few years back. It’s appropriate for this time of year, and it reflects back on not so much my life and times–but what it was like to be a kid growing up on a ranch, living with horses and cattle in the middle of nowhere in Idaho’s Rockies.
Happy Trails to you all, and enjoy!
