This week on the ranch…
Daughter Melanie took the above image early Tuesday morning as we headed over to the Lemhi valley to buy some pregnant mama cows. Despite the harsh air and wall of dense fog on our drive out, it was a beautiful morning showcasing clouds tinged with hues of purple and pink.
Caitlin snapped the above photo that same day coming back into the valley. In contrast to the warm blue sky, the harsh air had not yet warmed from that morning, and the wall of fog didn’t dissipate until well into the afternoon. It was one of those days that offered a more stern reminder of winters advance.
We had a bit of snow in the Pahsimeroi Wednesday morning. Weather like this tends to get the herd up and moving. Though they settled quickly, as did the white flakes falling carelessly from the sky. By afternoon it had melted off, and the sun prevailed. The blanket of white continues to migrate down the mountains on either side of the valley, however, and soon it will be here to stay.
The herd remains content despite the increasingly cold weather. There are many factors at play when it comes to grazing this time of year. The amount of grass is important. Though cattle must stockpile for winter, we leave enough to feed the soil as well. Quality is just as crucial. When frost and forage mix, cattle must be monitored carefully. Before long we will start to supplement with winter stores; the bounty which was cut following a long summer of irrigation.

Quote of the Week
“There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story.”
—Linda Hogan
This week’s story: “Riding for the Brand on Early Alderspring Ranch”
Dear Friends
This coming year marks 30 years on Alderspring Ranch for us. When I reflect on the life we’ve had, I have mixed emotions. Our lives have been rich, but the work has been unrelenting.
Sometimes I wish we could have taken time off. Sure, occasionally, we camped or went fishing, but for the most part, we simply worked. Our kids learned the meaning and yield working with animals on the land can give, and it shaped who they are today.
There was pleasure in the work as well as hardship. But all the while in our place among these mountains, we walked in beauty and quiet. The mountains and the land shaped us profoundly.
This week’s tale is from a October over 20 years ago and features one of our star ranch hands who still works with us today. Click on the link to meet her and vicariously experience a classic October blizzard.
Happy trails!
