This week on the ranch…
That’s Wesley, range rider turned ranch hand, pitching some green to about a dozen beeves getting ready to head to their final destination and ultimately, your table. You see even though the seasons change, many things remain the same. We still continue the work of summer. And though the means by which it’s distributed changes, the source of that green nutrition is the same. The soil rests now, covered in a layer of white, but it reappear in the spring and from it green will continue to grow.
That’s Jeremiah’s cow pup Ted and not-so-cow lab, Pal. Winter is the off-season for the cow dogs around here, but they are still eager to tag along every time we leave the house. For the most part they are along for the ride, though from time to time they prove over-eager to push some beeves and it’s all we can do to keep them on the flat bed.
The second week of feeding hay comes to a close, and the beeves are well adapted to the winter routine. We’ve had some beautiful nights this week, and low temperatures along with them. Despite the frost-filled mornings, temperatures reach the high twenties by afternoon, and the sun offers enough warmth to thaw the day.

This week’s story: “A Christmas Card from Zeke LaRue”
Dear Friends
I’m just rolling into town right now on a frosty, yet clear December day. One of the things I need to do Is to pick up a Christmas tree tag from the local Forest Service office.
Every year we head up into the hills and brave sometimes deep snow to go on the hunt of the elusive perfect Christmas tree in our native Douglas-fir and lodgepole forests that surround the valley. Although sometimes the weather doesn’t fully cooperate, it’s always a beautiful day that we enjoy together as a family.
I think one of the nicest parts of the journey is reflecting together on past years of our Christmas tree quest, and today, I’m even remembering acquisition of the tag.
And I remembered an old friend by the name of Zeke LaRue. It’s a sort of early Christmas card from the ranch that he delivers in this tome I wrote several Christmases past.
Happy Trails to you all!
Glenn
