This week on the ranch…

Melanie captured this image at the home ranch, featuring the cow pup Buster front and center. We’ve had some remarkable looking skies at the ranch this week and they have us looking forward to those late nights on the range.

This time of year is riddled with range prep – from gear and equipment to horses and beeves. It’s full of anticipation and excitement, long days and tired crews. Next week, we’ll be trailing the cattle down the valley, along the highway, and over the Salmon river onto the range for another summer of grazing.

That’s Montana on the left, and Jed on the right, getting the horses shod in preparation for a summer on the range. They will carry us over 800 miles this summer, over and across some rough country, so their feet are high on the list of priorities.

Daughters and crew took the annual trip to the Big Loop Rodeo in Jordan Valley, Oregon last weekend. Glenn and Montana were kind enough to stay back at the ranch and keep things together and critters fed. Then Monday rolled around and everyone was right back to it.

We brought the herd into the corrals over at the lease ranch this week to look everyone over and sort off the cattle that we’ll be taking up onto the range this summer. Josh took this photo as we left, heading back to the home ranch. There we’ll capture pre-range weights, which also gives us another opportunity to look over each animal closely to confirm they are ready and fit for a summer of grazing the high country.

Dear Friends 

Next week is the week. At the beginning of June, we’ll head our cattle to the high ranges for summer grazing. It’s an 8 mile trail with a long black line of beeves stretched out over the farm-to market road down the Pahsimeroi Valley to US highway 93. It’s there we’ll turn north (the road ultimately leads to Canada, and south to Mexico) for just a couple of miles and then cross the Salmon River, raging with snowmelt. It’s a tiny bridge for the 400 plus beeves we’ll tread across the turbid waters, and sometimes they need to be led by example.

No worries, because there’s many cattle returning to the range who’ve traveled this way before. They will lead the young fearlessly, many of whom have never been on a bridge over troubled waters.

It’s going to take the biggest part of the day, but it is so worth it. Early reconnaissance reports from the 70 square miles of grassland state that it is a fantastic grass year.

We can’t wait.
