This week on the ranch…

Things went swiftly at the ranch this week, with the last bit of range prep underway, the big move, and all the normal day-to-day back at the home ranch. Here’s Jed, taking care of the last few sets of feet belonging to the ones which will carry us hundreds of miles over the course of the summer. An important task, and one we don’t thank them enough for.

The range season has started (pictures below) and things are busy as every. Lots of moving parts and pieces this year, with this summer’s batch of sheep being just one of them. These guys are happy on green grass, soaking up the moisture that we’ve been getting – it’s been a wet spring and we’re thankful for it, as are the fields.

We’ve got plenty of horses to go around this summer, a very necessary resource for riders and beeves alike. We cover rough country, you see, and lots of it. Rotating rides and riders is extremely necessary to maintain condition and do right by those involved.

There’s Linnaea at the home ranch, where chores continue despite the yearling herd having gone to the range. We’ve still got a whole herd of mamas and babes alike, comfortable on green pasture and learning the ways of the world they joined over the last few weeks.

This is it – the beeves back on the range. It’s hard to believe another summer is here – we began the journey by trailing down the valley, along a small stretch of highway, and over the raging Salmon River. More country than some of these young beeves have seen in their lifetimes; thankfully there were range returners (not to mention riders) to guide the way.

Over the next several days, we’ll be grazing just above the banks and cliffs along the Salmon River, adjacent to highway 93. As the summer progresses and the days get longer, we’ll move higher – eventually all the way into the timber. These are the early days, the inaugural “stints” as we call them for riders and animals alike. It allows everyone to get into the swing of things, before the country steepens and the trips in become longer.

That’s Annie, aboard Ruby the mare during one of our first days of summer range grazing. Her, along with others on the crew keep careful watch over the herd and act as human fences to carefully manage grazing, and move beeves along onto new grass. Movements are minimal, and consumption aplenty.

Dear Friends,

Warning: Border Collies may die for you. When human truly connects with them, I think they are willing to do anything. There is no ask too great for Border, and as the Boss, you need to exercise caution.

I’ve seen it time and time again, where dog or horse lays it all down for the boss. Thankfully, they never were hurt in the process. But it made me gratefully (and humbly) aware that i need to be careful what I ask for.

Come with Melanie and I as we stand on the banks of a river gone wild a few years ago and a cadre of black cattle dove in.
