This week on the ranch…

Overview of our most recent cow camp along Little Hat Creek. The night pen is across the creek from the riders’ tents. The cattle don’t have access to the creek for drinking, as they may impact beaver and fish habitat. Instead, we pump water from the creek to stock tanks inside the night pen.

Oldest daughter Melanie’s two colts and several old retired horses enjoy some nice grass pasture. They’re actually grazing where the sheep herd just left; the sheep opt mostly for forbs, while the horses are happy to eat the leftover grass.

The mama cows and calves graze a new swathe of grass underneath the tempestuous cover of another thunderstorm back at the home ranch.

Webb resets the siphon on several stock tanks that function as a secondary water source for the herd away from the main cow camp These “satellite” tanks allow us to expand our grazing territory while reducing impacts around camp itself.

Dear Friends,

The ranch cowherd is just passed the middle of calving. We’re about 70% through over 200 mamas, and things are going wonderfully.

Summer/spring calving on green grass is beautiful. Most of our neighbors and friends calve in winter, and when weather gets tough, death loss can be staggering. I talked to a friend in the next valley who lost 400 calves to exposure this year.

Winter can be absolutely brutal.

We know, because we used to do that. Then, a friend mentioned “natural calving,” where he was following the cycles of natural, wild bovines who have babies in the spring. Ever since adopting this idea, we’ve never looked back.

Even so, occasionally we have a problem. We’ve had a couple of twins, thankfully, and they become eligible for a foster calf position when a mama loses her baby.

And that’s what this story is about. It’s calving several years ago, and one particular calf lost her young one…

And as is often the case when we have loss on the ranch, we can help with redemption.
