This week on the ranch…
Winter is a harsh time, and after last weeks aggressive temperatures, we had a 30+ degree spell to warm everyone up. It melted off some of the snow, to reveal a bit of green for cattle and horses alike. Caitlin snapped this photo of Adele, one of the horses we picked up last spring for our summer range riding program. We keep a careful eye on everyone this time of year, making sure to look over each animal in order to check their movement, signs of sickness, and overall condition.
Meet Alderspring’s newest addition! This calf was born yesterday and has already settled in well with mama and the herd. Though we try to avoid calving in December, we have a few little ones running around right now. With all of the late calving mama cows we’ve picked up over the last couple of months, we are sure looking forward to spring.

This week’s story: “New Year’s Joy”
Dear Friends
It’s still fairly busy on the ranch this week; there’s chores to do, firewood to harvest from nearby cottonwood forests, fence to build, and beeves to sort.
It’s all pretty physical, and that’s intentional. It’s pretty disabling to do non-physical work in the winter when your hands just start freezing and every minute you stand, it feels like within just another few hours, you’ll simply become part of your frozen environment.
Thinking about that brings me back to a New Years memory I captured about working with an old cowboy friend of mine in the next valley. I’ll use that for this week’s story, and as sort of a New Year’s greeting.
Remembering the likes of old friends and the cloth they were cut from puts perspective on our own experiences today. It seems much of the hardships we may have to endure pale in comparison to what they had to survive on a day to day basis.
Indeed, despite what naysayers portray, we live in a blessed generation. Instead of the little that our forebears had, we have plenty. I hope you all find continuance of that in 2023!
Happy New Year! May you find Happy Trails in 23!
Glenn
