This Week’s Story: The Pine Contortionist
The surf is pounding hard against solid rock as I write this. February winds drive breakers that hammer the basaltic pillars and haystacks dotting the shoreline and send spray rocketing skyward. Caryl managed to score a super reasonable house on the bluffs perched precariously along the Oregon seacoast for a short getaway. Our 60s bodies, minds and spirits needed a breather before grass decides to emerge on the ranch, and water, waves and sand will nicely do the trick…..

Josh and Rose about to go set up some electric fence. We’re grazing some winter stockpile grass right now, and we use hotwire fence to give the herd only a little at a time. This ensures that they don’t eat all the best forage first and leave only woody, low-nutrition stems behind. Giving them a little at a time makes them graze less selectively. We also feed hay on top of the winter stockpile to ensure we meet their nutritional needs. Photo credit Linnaea Piva.

Ranching involves a large amount of mechanic-ing. Whether it’s the tractors, backhoes, trailers, trucks, atvs or motorcycles, keeping everything outfitted and running is it’s own full time job! Photo credit Rose Morris.
