This Week’s Story: Ancients on the Range
Mammoth tusks. Images of ancient ivory filled my mind as I followed the mud and ice track in my pickup, meandering off the high ridgeline of the Continental Divide yesterday. It was a lovely day for the drive into our county from the Montana outback. I’d only passed one other pickup over the last hour of driving, averaging a nice clip of 50 miles an hour…

This mama had a surprise calf recently. The yearlings who were in the herd with this mama and her new baby were a little too curious about the new calf. To give this pair time to bond without being harassed by over-curious yearlings we constructed a temporary corral in the field and put mama and baby in it for awhile (the calf is hard to see from this angle, but he is in there!). A gentle, early-spring sunset!
Emily, Annie, and Melanie recently took a road-trip along the California coast to enjoy some sun and sand before the grazing and range riding season begins in earnest. Here are some picture from their trip.

Itās so interesting to travel and see people ranching in other parts of the country! The area around San Luis Obispo was pretty cool; the cattle graze these steep hillside meadows amidst oak forest. -Melanie
