Here is 6th daughter, Annie, saying hello to Allie after a good day. Allie has slept for a good part of the day and her “day” of work is just beginning. At night, she patrols the ranch, keeping coyotes away and our animals safe. But despite her important job, she always has time to say hi for a moment!
Here’s daughter Linnaea with Jeremiah and Caitlin in front of her. All 3 are headed out to move some cattle on a stormy afternoon!

This week’s story: When a tree falls in the forest…
Springtime comes in fits and starts. Yesterday, we hit 70 degrees; a slight contrast to the white we would see in the hills the very next morning (today, as I write this).
The shift happened in stealth last night in the wee hours, when we all were startled awake by a tremendous squall of gale force wind bearing a horizontal rain that truly shook the massive logs that comprise the walls of our home. I remember laying in bed actually considering how things would go if those logs started moving–lifting. Fourteen years ago, when I worked on stacking those log walls with our custom log-smith guy, I was certainly intrigued with the fact that nothing holds them down.
Except the force of gravity.
And when you are sane and lucid and not startled awake, gravity seems like a a solid force to hold a house together. But when brought from slumber by the Williwaw Wind, and in that state between dream and reality, all bets for the laws of physics are off. Logs could very well fly, for all I know.
I think it’s in part because I know they can. This story I wrote 5 years back reflects back to one such time…
It started with what sounded like the resounding crack of a high powered rifle as the base of the tree snapped to pieces like kindling. I didn’t get to see which way the tree was going to fall because the sound of it breaking was enough to send my horse in a wild and blind gallop through the thick timber surrounding the big tree.
The crashing and the raining of broken limbs added to my mare’s frenzy. I just tucked my head into the hair of her mane and held on with all my might, hoping she couldn’t knock my head on low hanging branches as we were racing wildly through dense fir forest along the Sky Island Fork of Hat Creek…

And this week (until Sunday the 10th at midnight MST) you can get 10% off on the following cuts:
- Top Sirloin Steaks (consistency + flavor found here)

One of those filet mignons! We cut this beautifully tender steak to 2 inches thick and shape them (we know of no other producer who does this) so that they are consistently thick and round for a beautiful even cooking!

This little watercolor was done this week by daughter Becky, depicting a range rider’s worn hands after a long day of herding cattle.
Daughter Annie, bringing up the drag when moving the herd! of Alderspring beeves a few miles down the road!
And that’s it for this week!
