This week on the ranch…
Winter is officially upon us and the snow fell in the valley this week to prove it. Each morning has been filled with air that stings and illuminates your breath until the sun crests the hills and lights up the now-white fields. Temperatures are dropping but the magnificent creation around us only adapts.
Above is oldest daughter Melanie, sorting out finished beeves heading to their final destination, and ultimately your plates. We try our best to do right by these animals, keeping them in the corrals for as little time as possible, and most often sort from the back of a horse to reduce stress. Producing wellness is our priority, and our practices aim to reflect that. Our biweekly sort continues even through the holidays. The seasons change but the rhythms remains the same.
Another move for these beeves from the lease ranch down the valley to Alderspring home base. We have cattle spread across different three different grounds right now, soaking up the last bit of organic pastures before the snow becomes too deep for grazing. Despite winter’s advance, the white only masks the green nutrition underneath, and as such the cattle remain content, heads down.

Quote of the Week
“Snow was falling, so much like stars filling the dark trees that one could easily imagine its reason for being was nothing more than prettiness.”
—Mary Oliver
This week’s story: “Passing the Baton at the Change of Seasons”
Dear Friends
As you likely figured out, winter pulled a fast one on us. We barely had time to get psychologically prepared, even though most things on the ranch were ready.
There’s actually a lot going on in the fall, and it doesn’t all have to do with us and our work. Fact is, nature is doing its own preparations, often silently but quite certainly. All we have to do to take notice is to be quiet and listen.
And that’s what this reflection is about. There’s so much to see and learn when we pay attention to the best teacher.
Happy Trails.

And that’s it for this week!
Thanks again for partnering in what we do!
Glenn, Caryl, cowgirls and cowboys at Alderspring.
We’ve been crafting our pastured protein here in Idaho’s Rocky Mountains for nearly 30 years and delivering it direct to our partners for nearly as long. This is wild wellness, delivered from our ranch to your door.
