This week on the ranch…
The beeves are still happily grazing deep green forage. The part of the herd at the lease ranch down the road will return to the home ranch next week to soak up the last bounty of pasture before we make use of winter stores. It’s a beautiful time of year, with the arrival of October bringing cooler days, smoke-less skies, and impressive weather systems moving through the Pahsimeroi valley.
This week Jeremiah, lease ranch manager and wife Caitlin finished up soil sampling over at the home ranch. They dug 76 holes in total, each representing one subsample, for a total of nine samples. Pictured above is Jeremiah collecting one subsample to be combined with several others from the same field – into one sample. These will get sent off to a lab to be analyzed – information we can use to measure our progress and learn which areas we can be improving. Here at Alderspring, it all comes back to the soil.
Caitlin snapped the above photo of range riders turned ranch hands Josh and Wesley, guiding a helicopter of wheel line pieces up the road. On Monday they replaced a couple of problematic sections – such is the maintenance of October. In the coming days, the pivots and wheel lines of Alderspring will be winterized and “parked” until springtime. Having irrigation systems ready to turn on and start rolling when it’s that time again is one of our priorities during the off season!
Quote of the Week
“We abuse land because we see it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”
—Aldo Leopold
This week’s story: “The Days are Short, the Time is Long”
Dear Friends
You first notice the color change. Lush greens are fading to brown, the green color trickling down out of the tops of the grass and down into the roots. You can still see green, if you walk around and pick up a handful of grass, a bouquet mix of orchard grass, clover, alfalfa, sainfoin, and bluegrass. Looking out across the pasture, the grass is bent over, wind tousled, like a toddler’s hair. I know. I have a toddler.
Color was stolen from us this year. We had a sudden hard frost in early October, before the aspens and cottonwoods along our river had turned color. Green leaves changed directly to brown (without passing “go”, as you might say). The winding river bottom, which should have been shrouded by resplendent gold and copper leaves, was instead a disappointing ashy green gray.
