Quote of the Week
“Regenerating our soil ecosystem is the most cost-effective national investment that we can make to mitigate climate change and heal society.”
―Gabe Brown, North Dakota Farmer, author of “Dirt to Soil”
This Week’s Story From the Ranch: Cows Capturing Carbon
Soil Carbon Coalition founder, Peter Donovan, after giving a conference lecture on soil health, stepped out of the conference room. Before he could think about coffee or the restroom, a farmer stopped him in the hallway. “What is the fastest way to get carbon into my soils?”
Peter thought for a moment, then said: “Buy a railroad car full of coal and disk it in to your fields.”
The farmer stood openmouthed for a priceless second or two, and then realized that the soils expert was pulling his leg.
Peter told me that story over coffee one day a few years back, and I never forgot it. It seems we get so hung up on this carbon-sequestering thing and how that’s going to fix everything that we’ve lost our way on the real issue….

Photos from this week on the ranch…
Those are a crew of hungry beeves following the feed truck through the blizzard to today’s feeding spot. Because the snow was coming down, we fed the hay in a spiral pattern that would keep the beeves packed closely together as they ate…and sheltered from winter weather!
Maddy, youngest of the daughters, pulling ice out of the horses’ water after breaking it.
That cute little guy is Oscar, weanling bay colt, and next to him is his friend, Willie. Oscar and Willie live out with the cattle so that they can get access to the best hay. And they have a few old retiree horses around as wise babysitters!
Here’s Maddy, out checking on horses! We do a daily check to make sure everyone looks healthy and is staying warm. The mare Natty here seemed pretty content despite the weather!
And that’s it for this week!
Thanks again for partnering in what we do!
Glenn, Caryl, cowgirls and cowboys at Alderspring.
We’ve been crafting our pastured protein here in Idaho’s Rocky Mountains for nearly 30 years and delivering it direct to our partners for nearly as long. This is wild wellness, delivered from our ranch to your door.
Your partnership in Alderspring helps us maintain what is unique in today’s agricultural world; Alderspring is a Carbon NEGATIVE and Climate POSITIVE operation. We ran the numbers, and our cows help us capture more carbon in the ground each year on our irrigated pastures than we release!
