Newsletter from September 7, 2014:Â
Things have gotten a little crazy around here. Several months ago, a fine young man named Ethan asked our dear Abby to be his bride, and she said “yes.” Two more weeks until the wedding! The couple plan to hold the ceremony in the high Pahsimeroi, and then a reception and lawn dance here at the ranch. We’ve still quite a bit to do to get ready, but it should be a lot of fun.
The coolness of fall is upon us (we may need coats for the wedding). We’ve had frost for the past three mornings. Not heavy, mind you, put just to remind us that our growing days are numbered. Abby’s flowers have not yet been nipped, mostly because she covers them at night with old sheets that Caryl picks up at thrift stores just for garden protection. Our frost free days rarely exceed three months. Gardening is a challenge.
The beeves love these days. I can’t blame them. The weather is lovely. The days get up into the high seventies, and the air is so clear. If not for the curvature of the earth, I would think you could see two hundred miles.
Our hay crop is finally in the bale. This has been one of the most difficult seasons we’ve had to bale hay…rains and dewy mornings have made it like haying in the East. Our bales weren’t moldy black, like so many of our southern Idaho neighbors. We are grateful for the rain, though. It has been good for the wild range country like no other year I have seen. It is turning green again, very unusual for our arid rangeland landscape in the fall.
